Class Experience

In this live class, students will explore the question "Will temperature affect the speed of a reaction?". We will learn what constitutes a chemical reaction (in broad terms), then proceed to conduct a controlled quantitative experiment to test the effects of temperature the speed of a reaction. We will end with some thoughts for how to extend this idea with easy experiments that can be done at home.

Learning Goals

Students will practice conducting an experiment that involves collecting data. They will examine the data to come to a conclusion that is supported by the data.

Parental Guidance
This experiment involves the use of hot water. Students can participate with hot (or even warm) tap water rather than boiling water.
Supply List
To do the experiment at home, you will need:
- 3 Alka-Seltzer tablets (a box is approx. $5 on Amazon.com; Another brand would work as long as the ingredients include sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. They should fizz when added to water)
- 3 small cups
- hot/warm tap water
- ice cubes
- timer
- science goggles (optional....we are not using harsh chemicals)
- experiment worksheet (will be provided before class)
 1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello!
I am passionate about teaching and learning. I believe that everyone, at any age can learn anything! Learning is exciting, and I am continuously filling my well of curiosity with new information about things that interest me.

I have taught kids from kindergarten to grade 12, as well as young adults in university. I have also homeschooled my three kids and they have taken classes on Outschool.

I hold degrees in Education, a Master’s in Physical Geography and a Bachelor's in Environmental Science. I teach classes in science, geography and math.

I love textile art and can often been found sewing, knitting, felting, or weaving. My next big project is figuring out how to make shoes! I am also fluent in French and love traveling to francophone areas.
