In this one-time class we will explore the concept of poisonous plants and why they employ the survival strategies they do. Students will look at examples of famous and common toxic plants and learn about the ecological contexts they evolved in. We will investigate questions such as: What physical defenses do plants have? Why did some plants evolve to produce toxins? What is the difference between poison, toxin, and venom? What are the major categories of plant toxins? Are there medical and other applications for poisonous plants? Students will learn through an interactive lecture with images, a video and discussion.
