Description

Class Experience

Students will be able to use a map and a globe as a representation of space. Students will be able to sketch maps to illustrate the world around them. Students will locate key features on a map or globe and use cardinal directions to describe the relationship between two or more features. These learning goals are part of the Social Studies curriculum of many states.
This is part of a unit taught to second, third and fourth graders as part of their learning standards. I enjoy connecting art with geography and helping students make connections about their place in the world.
Students can work on drawing their own maps inside or outside of class. Students will be asked to share their maps in the classroom.
Students should have paper and pencils for working on maps. A ruler might be helpful. They need to know the name of their city. Handouts will be available after class. All other resources provided by the teacher.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
I would like to use Google Earth to show people their own addresses as seen by satellite imaging. If you wish this to remain private, feel free to offer a different address in the city closest to you. For example, I live near St. Paul, Minnesota so I could use St. Paul, Minnesota instead of my direct street address.
