Description

Class Experience

Students will learn the basics about insects, arachnids, millipedes and centipedes. They will learn about some cool adaptations, fun facts, the basics of a butterfly's life cycle, and some of the important roles these little animals play in our world (I.e. food chain, decomposing, pollination, among others).
I have a Bachelors of Science in Biology where I studied zoology, ecology, and animal behavior, among other things. I have worked as a zoo keeper with animals including elephants, lions, giraffes, flamingos, siamangs, lemurs, tortoises, snakes, monkeys, orangutans, amur leopards, and red pandas. I have been a zoo camp instructor as well as an animal, science, and environment educator at Walt Disney World.
There will be an activity provided in the form of a scavenger hunt/observation journal that can be completed after class and is optional. Students can choose between the activities to meet their comfort level or complete both activities. These activities will hopefully help spark a passion for exploring the world, animals, science, and the environment. And it should be fun!

I will be providing a PDF document that can be printed at home for an optional post-class activity and an activity we will be starting in class. I also always suggest having a piece of paper and something to write or draw near by.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
  • Google Slides
The learners will be assessed for comprehension throughout the lesson with discussion based questions and games.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will be learning about insects and arachnids which have been considered scary for people of all ages. Although the goal of this class is that students will not be as scared of these animals as they have been in the past. The post class activity is an observation/scavenger hunt activity with instructions to not touch any animal and to stay in safe parent approved areas.
