Class
Señora Sarah
Average rating:5.0Number of reviews:(71)
In this one-time world history class, students will learn about a Native Maya drink and ancient ruins, and talk about their likes and dislikes in the Spanish language as we explore Chiapas, Mexico.

Class experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Students will be able to discuss their likes and dislikes in Spanish by the end of this class. They will also expand their knowledge of an ancient recipe and the ruins at Palenque.
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in the Principles and Methods of Language Education, and I have taught English as a second language to children online since 2014. I also have a TEFL Certificate.

I have spoken Spanish fluently for over 17 years.

I lived in and traveled around Southern Mexico for 7 years, shoulder to shoulder with the people from various Indigenous roots. I also did volunteer service in the Tzeltal and Zapotec communities located in Chiapas and Oaxaca specifically.

I have personally visited the Palenque site in Chiapas, and trekked in the jungle to see the spider monkeys and local wildlife.

I have also professionally taught many online classes about Indigenous Mexican cultures.
Homework Offered
Homework will be listed in the virtual classroom under the WELCOME post. Homework is 100% optional for this class. If your children would like to complete homework, there are 3 different assignments they can choose from, depending on their skills and preferences. (Or they can do them all!) I have custom designed each handout for your child's benefit. Each homework activity is meant to be completed individually. You can choose between: 1) Chiapas Coloring Printable (printer required) This homework activity is suitable for younger students, or just kids who love to color! Remember to post pictures of your coloring creation after class. 2) Chiapas Word Search Printable (printer required) This is a word search that I've designed to help your child review the vocabulary that we used during class. Remember to post a picture of your completed word search after class. 3) Palenque Writing/Video Prompt (no printer required) Think about what it would've been like to discover Palenque. What a surprise! How would you feel discovering this amazing place in the jungle? Would you tell all your friends? Why is it important to share these discoveries with the world? Write at least 2 complete paragraphs explaining your answer. Alternatively, you can record a 1-3 minute video telling us about your thoughts. Remember to post it to the class so we can see it!
Assessments Offered
Learners will be assessed informally for this lesson. There are no letter grades given. However, I'll be in touch with parents and students after class with feedback!
Grades Offered
 2 files available upon enrollment
I will supply optional handouts for homework. Students may print these if they wish, but they are not required to complete this class. No other supplies are needed.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
There are two short YouTube videos used in this lesson, under 3 minutes 30 seconds in total. They feature a video tour of the ruins at Palenque, and a demonstration of an ancient Mexican football game.
I consulted The Encyclopedia Britannica (topic MAYA), the website "https://www.naatikmexico.org/", and The Oxford Encyclopedia of Mexican History and Culture (topic LATIN AMERICAN HISTORY).

Students do not need to consult these sources directly for class, unless they want to.
