Homework
Homework is 100% optional for this class. If your children would like to complete homework, there are 3 different assignments they can choose from, depending on their skills and preferences. (Or they can do them all!) I have custom designed each handout for your child's benefit. Each homework activity is meant to be completed individually. You can choose between: 1) Oaxaca Coloring Printable (printer required) This homework activity is suitable for younger students, or just kids who love to color! Remember to post pictures of your coloring creation after class. 2) Oaxaca Word Search Printable (printer required) This is a word search that I've designed to help your child review the vocabulary that we used during class. Remember to post a picture of your completed word search after class. 3) Oaxaca Writing/Video Prompt (no printer required) Think about life for an indigenous Zapotec person 1,000 years ago. How was their life different from your life today? What would you like or dislike about Zapotec life? Write at least 2 complete paragraphs explaining your answer. Alternatively, you can record a 1-3 minute video telling us about your thoughts. Remember to post it to the class so we can see it!
Assessment
Learners will be assessed informally for this lesson. There are no letter grades given. However, I'll be in touch with parents and students after class with feedback!

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Bienvenidos! In this one-time class, kids will prepare for their unique trip to southern Mexico! This is no run-of-the-mill trip to Cancun. Take advantage of my 7 years of experience living and traveling around Mexico.

We'll practice some basic introductions in Spanish, so kids will be able to meet and greet the local Oaxacan people on their trip. Your kids will also learn about some eccentric Indigenous foods. Fried crickets, anyone?

To get your kids fully engaged, this class features:
-a Spanish vocabulary review game
-a full-length slide presentation, featuring photos of Oaxaca (custom designed)
-a Jeopardy trivia game (custom designed)
-a video tour of Zapotec ruins in Mitla, sourced from YouTube

This is not only a basic Spanish class; this is cultural immersion. Your children will be ready for a REAL trip to Mexico, the local way. I'll guide the students through Spanish conversation, discussion of Oaxacan cuisine and archaeology, and chatting about special travel experiences. No prior knowledge of Spanish, Zapotec, or Mexico is required for this class.

Do you have your plane tickets yet?

***NOT FOR PARENTS: There is a clip from a YouTube video featured in this class. It lasts under 2 minutes, and is used to bring the ruins of Mitla to life. This video is not in any way a substitute for my live instruction, and it is not intended for pure entertainment. I carefully selected an applicable video to show the students in this lesson the ruins in a way that pictures just can't.

All handouts and printable pages are custom designed by me personally.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to introduce themselves in Spanish by the end of this class. They will also expand their knowledge of Oaxacan Indigenous foods and ancient Zapotec ruins.
