Class Experience

Students will be able to introduce themselves in Spanish by the end of this class. They will also expand their knowledge of Oaxacan Indigenous foods and ancient Zapotec ruins.
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in the Principles and Methods of Language Education, and I have taught English as a second language to children online since 2014. I also have a TEFL Certificate. I have also spoken Spanish for over 17 years. I lived in and traveled around Southern Mexico for 7 years, shoulder to shoulder with the native people from various indigenous roots. I also did volunteer service in the Tzeltal and Zapotec communities located in Chiapas and Oaxaca specifically, among other indigenous groups.
Homework is 100% optional for this class. If your children would like to complete homework, there are 3 different assignments they can choose from, depending on their skills and preferences. (Or they can do them all!) I have custom designed each handout for your child's benefit. Each homework activity is meant to be completed individually. You can choose between:

1) Oaxaca Coloring Printable (printer required)
This homework activity is suitable for younger students, or just kids who love to color! Remember to post pictures of your coloring creation after class.

2) Oaxaca Word Search Printable (printer required)
This is a word search that I've designed to help your child review the vocabulary that we used during class. Remember to post a picture of your completed word search after class.

3) Oaxaca Writing/Video Prompt (no printer required)
Think about life for an indigenous Zapotec person 1,000 years ago. How was their life different from your life today? What would you like or dislike about Zapotec life? Write at least 2 complete paragraphs explaining your answer. Alternatively, you can record a 1-3 minute video telling us about your thoughts. Remember to post it to the class so we can see it!
Students do not need any special supplies for this course, but they may wear their sombreros to class if they wish!
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will be assessed informally for this lesson. There are no letter grades given. However, I'll be in touch with parents and students after class with feedback!
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
There is a YouTube video used in this lesson, under 2 minutes long and featuring the ruins at Mitla, Oaxaca.
The Zapotec audio clips are taken from this video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUptXz81lP4&list=LL&index=1&t=70s.
The video tour of the Zapotec ruins at Mitla is taken from this video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwldnudjCgQ&list=LL&index=5&t=1s. I have also personally visited Mitla.
