Exploding Hearts! - Valentine's Day Science With Baking Soda + Vinegar

In this one-time class, students will create their very own "exploding" hearts to celebrate Valentine's Day! This experiment uses some common household products (baking soda & vinegar) to learn all about the three states of matter.

Class Experience

Students will gain an understanding of acid-base chemical reactions, and perform a science experiment to discuss what we learned.
Materials: 1. Vinegar (preferably pre poured into a cup or squirt bottle) 2. Baking soda (no more than 1 cup is needed; it doesn't need to be premeasured) 3. Glitter (I chose Valentine's day colors to celebrate, but feel free (and get creative) to use any colors that your heart desires!) 5. Cookie cutters (again, I went with heart shaped for the Valentine's Day theme, but it doesn't have to be!) You could even substitute your cookies cutters for a cup and make your own "friendship potion!" :) 6. Food coloring (completely optional - but fun to add some color!) 7. Spoons 8. Baking pan (to contain spillage) 9. Paper towels (for cleanup)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
35 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Science is fun... and sometimes messy! Younger learners may need some supervision and assistance.
