Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Watch our hearts grow bigger, bigger, bigger..... and maybe even POP!

In this class, we will add simple household ingredients together and figure out the right ratio to get our bag to explode using a common acid/base reaction.

First, we will draw on our bag - a simple heart or whatever you want.

Then, we will add the other ingredients in a specific order and do the experiment together. Doing your own is best, but you can always watch mine.

Finally, we will talk about the chemical reaction that happens when you combine baking soda and vinegar. Expect a little bit of mess.

Maybe the bag might just pop!

If it does not, we can talk about what we can do next time to ensure it does. Get your thinking caps on.

Supplies:
- deep tray/pan to contain the mess
- ziplock bag (sandwich size) - bring 2 if you want to do it again
- 1-2 cups vinegar (any kind)
- 1-2 Tablespoons baking soda
- 1 paper towel
- marker (Sharpie is preferred, but you can also bring washable or dry erase)
- red food coloring (optional)
Learning Goals
Students will experience what happens when an acid and a base react.

Parental Guidance
This class can have a little mess, so a grownup could be helpful to the side. We might also need those quick hands to close the ziplock baggie. Please stay off-screen, but a helpful hand is fine.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love looking around me and asking questions. "What if....?" Science is full of "what if" questions. Come explore simple science experiments with me. Most of the items can be found around your home or easily found at the store. I also have a love for math... especially math games. Join me as we make math fun! Many parents and learners appreciate the way I bring laughter to the classroom.

I have been an educator for 10 years: online ESL teacher for 5 years, and a Kindergarten teacher for 5 years before that. I have worked with children of all ages in various summer school and online activities. I have a Bachelor's in Music Education from Boise State University and a Masters in Pastoral Studies from Multnomah University. I live in Idaho, USA with my husband and my 2 young daughters (Ages 2 and 5). We enjoy reading books, getting a little messy, and taking walks together.
