Advertisements are all around us! Billboards, flyers, commercials, social media, and more! In this class we'll learn the basics about advertisements and students will be creating their own advertisements. I encourage lots of participation and discussion during class so I know what students understand. Each class will either be preparing students for the creation of their own advertisement or allowing students to showcase what they've created. In each class I will use slides and show...
Students will learn to basics of advertisements and get to try their hand at creating advertisements themselves. Students will learn what is allowed and what to avoid with the various forms of advertising and gain confidence with their creative abilities.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Management and Marketing and a Master's degree in Professional Communication. Advertising is something I'm passionate about and I have taught a full-year advertising course to high school students.
Each week students will have homework. Content journals are a way to keep track of the advertisements you see around you. The rest will be hands on creative projects. All projects will be completed individually. The length of the project can vary based on how much detail the student wants to go into, but I'd estimate 1-2 hours a week spent on homework.
Students will need access to a computer to create their advertisements, and a video camera/phone to record clips for their radio and television commercial. The specific type does not matter and more details can be provided as needed. I also encourage students to have paper and something to write with during class to take notes.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will grade each assignment students complete on a points system (rubric given with each assignment), which can easily translate to a letter grade. I am also happy to provide an informal written assessment at parent's request. This class is meant to be fun and creative!
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
All company ideas will be pre-approved for the assignment.
Sample advertisements have been found through various sources (which will be told to students during class) or created by myself or my friends/peers. All other materials have been originally compiled by me.
