In this Class students will learn about ancient Greece through playing Assassins Creed Odyssey (available on PC, Play Station or Xbox).

Students can either play the main game or use the discovery tour (no fighting involved). They will get to wander around Ancient Greece, visiting temples and interacting with historical people from that time. The story is fictional but a lot of places, characters and events are based on Ancient Greece history and Greek myths.

This class is ideal for students who just enjoy gaming or need to learn about Ancient Greece for school or personal interest. It's a fun and unique way of learning. Where else can you wander around the Pantheon, sail a Greek ship or chat with Plato (I personally found him a bit annoying :) )

I will be screensharing my playthrough and will also allow students to screenshare their game. This is a small class so there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions as well. students can join in at any time as content does not build and they are free to approach the game as they want.

This class will use the main game and the discovery tour ( which is a non fighting game mode and used in some schools to teach history). It allows players to wander around Ancient Greece and interact with various characters with out encountering fighting. The discovery tour can be purchased separately or it comes with the main game and is more suitable for younger students (please read the parental guidance to see if the main game is suitable)

Learning Goals

Students will learn about Ancient Greece through meeting people from that time such as Plato, Socrates and Herodotus.
Students will also be able to visit Greek Temples such as the Parthenon, Apollo's Temple and much more.

Other Details

Learning Needs
This is a very small class so ideal for students don't like larger groups and it also means students get more individual attention and able to interact more.
Parental Guidance
Buying Assassins Creed Odyssey through Ubisoft will require parent consent if the student does not already have an account. Gamer tags will be required for this class. Gamer tags must not be shared through the classroom page but they can be shared through a private message if that is needed. Assassins Creed Odyssey has a mature rating (17+) as it contains blood and gore, as well as sexual themes and strong language so will require parents consent for younger students. The Discovery tour mode which allows you to wander around Greece meeting people does not have blood/gore or sexual themes so might be more suited to younger students.

Sources
Odyssey makes reference to Greek gods and also offers the chance to encounter some of them. Website of of some Greek legends: https://greekgodsandgoddesses.net/myths/ Odyssey also mentions the lost island of Atlantis and also allows you to visit this mythical land. Stories of Atlantis are partly based on a story told by the Greek philosopher Plato. Website about Plato and where he got the idea of Atlantis: https://www.thoughtco.com/platos-atlantis-from-the-timaeus-119667#:~:text=The%20original%20story%20of%20Plato's%20Atlantis%E2%80%94the%20famous%20lost Odyssey was developed to be historical accurate, however the story you play through is fictional. The development team based a lot of locations and characters of the game on films, books, myths, visiting actual locations in Greece and the work of Herodotus, a Greek historian. Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been working with children (Wales, UK) for about 20 years in various settings.

I have attended a Rudolf Steiner teacher training course and also qualified as an after school club leader. Mostly I have experience with home educated Children of all ages in a voluntary capacity. For 15 years I helped run a social group for home educating families and for the past 10 years (still doing this) I have helped with a large family camp for home educating families. This has involved a bit of everything. I've helped with animation classes, sport event and art classes. I have also taught making clay bread ovens and making bamboo pipes from bamboo. For the past couple of years I've helped out with a forest school club, mainly teaching the children (8-11 years) string tricks and making survival bracelets.

My hobby is art which I've been doing on and of for 20 years. For the past year I've been teaching art online classes to a group of home educated children as what I mostly enjoy is passing on skills (whatever the subject) to others. But beware sometimes my cat joins in the online sessions!
