Class Experience

***This Pokemon PE class is a video flex class, so there are no live meetings!

CALLING ALL POKEMON TRAINERS! Come join me in my quest to examine a Pokémon character for each letter of the alphabet and do related exercises to train for my next Pokémon battle. This 4-week flex class will take place once per week through a posted video. Each week's video will include an estimated 5+ minute examination of 6-7 different Pokémon characters using a google slideshow along with an estimated 20-25 minutes of exercises you will do along with me on the video. I encourage all students to stretch before beginning the exercises and take 3-5 minutes to cool down at the end by walking in place.

There will be no live meetings for this class, but I will be posting on the classroom page and students are expected to participate by engaging in discussion (parents can type responses for younger learners), posting pictures, and/or posting videos. Throughout the 4-week course, I will pose some thought-provoking Pokémon and fitness questions to get students engaged in the class and with one another. I will also post a weekly scavenger hunt challenge for an item associated with our letter-related Pokémon and/or exercises for each week. We can share our photos, videos, and details about our finds with one another on the classroom page. There will be a 4-week Pokémon PE Exercise Log attached to the welcome message you will get after enrolling in the course. The target for fitness is to get 60+ minutes of physical activity per day by combining our Pokémon PE exercise video with other forms of physical activity you enjoy. The ultimate goal of the class is to combine our love for Pokémon with our wellness journey to stay fit and HAVE FUN!

Below is a breakdown by week for integrating Pokémon characters and new exercises. The actual list of chosen Pokémon is top secret, but I will give you the first one: For letter "A" we will learn fun facts about Ash Ketchum and do arm stretches and ab crunches. Each week will cover 6-7 characters and related exercises.

WEEK 1: Pokémon characters and exercises that begin with letters A-F
WEEK 2: Pokémon characters and exercises that begin with letters G-L
WEEK 3: Pokémon characters and exercises that begin with letters M-S
WEEK 4: Pokémon characters and exercises that begin with letters T-Z

So, Pokemon Trainers, grab your favorite Pokémon and let's get fit and HAVE FUN!

***This class is NOT about learning the alphabet or letter sounds, but it includes facts about Pokémon characters and exercises using each letter of the alphabet to provide an organized structure to the weekly exercise video. There will be NO LIVE MEETINGS in this Flex Class video course.

Parental Guidance
I advise parents to stay nearby to make sure your child is performing exercises safely. Just as a heads-up, for the dips exercise for Letter D, I use a chair. You may want to have your child use something heavier and more stable, like a sofa, etc. as an anchor for this exercise, or just do standing dips. Parents know their child best and what is and is not safe for them, so use your own judgement for what exercises your child completes and how they perform them. They should wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes, have a clear, safe place to exercise, and drink plenty of water. If they feel over-exerted, they are always free to pause the video to take water and rest breaks.
Supply List
The exercises I have chosen to perform for each Pokémon character/letter do not require specific exercise equipment, but wearing comfortable clothing and appropriate athletic shoes is encouraged. The kids may want to use an exercise mat for some exercises that require being on the floor or ground. In one exercise for Letter D, I use a chair. I will also be doing a short segment on jump roping with the letter J, so the kids are welcome to use a jump rope if they have one and can do so outside. If not, they can just jump in place without a rope along with that short portion of the video. There is not a lot of space required for the exercises, but please make sure your child has a small area free of anything that may be be unsafe for them when exercising.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, everyone! I'm Rhett, and I would love the chance to be one of your Outschool Instructors. From an early age, I've always found myself comfortable speaking or performing on stage to small or large groups. In high school, I competed on an elite Speech and Debate team specializing in political analysis, served as the student director for the community-access television station, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

I received my Bachelor's Degree in Communications from Mississippi State University, with dual concentrations in TV Broadcasting and Theater. I served as on-air talent for the on-campus news broadcast, performed in multiple theater productions, and was a member of Lab Rats Improv Comedy Troupe. After college, I moved to New York City for 2 years where I worked in communications and performed amateur stand up comedy. I am now back in Memphis, TN where I performed as an actor in the season 1 finale of Bluff City Law. I am also a musician and have performed live concerts at small and large venues throughout my life. My mom, Lizzy Spurlin, is an Outschool teacher as well.

My goal is to use my experiences to help students become not only effective public speakers, but confident ones. Public speaking and performance are often cited as one of many people's biggest fears. I believe I have the tools to teach students to mitigate this fear and develop their ideas into coherent messages for public presentation.

If the prospect of public speaking makes you anxious, I understand! But with the correct preparation and practice, the prospect becomes much less worrisome. I'd love to show you!
