Class Experience

Learning is the journey the brain takes when acquiring new information, and executive functioning is a critical component of this learning journey. Executive function skills require students to utilize memory, self-control, and attention flexibly to follow directions, plan, and multitask. The crucial role of executive function processes begins in the preschool years and increases as students progress through middle and high school when they’re expected to master complex skills that involve summarizing, note-taking and writing.

This 30 minute class will take place once a week and will focus on one core executive functioning, note taking, or study strategy each class. As a teacher who has both taught students with ADHD and has been a student with ADHD myself, I bring a unique perspective and expertise that gives me the ability to incorporate personal experiences into our weekly class sessions. I will be open about my journey with ADHD and strategies that did, and didn’t, work for me over the years. I didn’t let ADHD prevent me from achieving my goals, and I’m here to be sure that any neurodivergent challenge doesn’t get in the way of your child’s goals, either.

This class welcomes all teens, but is especially designed for learners who have ADHD, dyslexia, or are otherwise neurodivergent. The goal is to give students essential tools and strategies that will make navigating academic environments and life in general a little easier. Each class will include discussion, a short mini lesson, and a chance to apply what we learned through some form of practice. Before each class session, students will be provided a note-taking, interactive study guide for that week’s topic (these are optional activities to be completed as a group in class during our lesson). Often, other resources presented in class will be provided after each class session so families and students can take what they learned and use it outside the classroom.

During our class sessions, some topics that may be discussed include:
✅ Impulse control
✅ Feeling overwhelmed
✅ How to communicate effectively with others
✅ Goal setting
✅ Study skills and tips
✅ Time management
✅ Conflict resolution
✅ Self care
✅ Building an ADHD toolbox
✅ Notetaking strategies
✅ Prioritization

📌 This small group learning environment provides four key benefits for learners:
1️⃣ Personalized Instruction

2️⃣ Quality Feedback

3️⃣ Re-teach or Pre-teach: Small group instruction is an opportunity for me to provide additional teaching and practice often needed for struggling students to master important skills or understand key concepts.

4️⃣ Build Confidence Through Collaboration: Small group instruction can provide a comfortable environment and boost the confidence of students who might not otherwise participate in a lesson or activity. Small group instruction encourages teamwork as everyone in the group is working toward achieving the same goal.
