Course Description: In each exciting class meeting, students will participate in a new read-aloud each week that highlights story elements such as characters, setting, plot, etc. We will also build comprehension by discussing the main idea and key details with slideshows and graphic organizers to accompany each book! π₯³ Course Objectives: - Identify story elements such as characters, setting, and plot. - Answer questions when prompted using evidence from the text. - Identify vocabulary terms that suggest feelings and appeal to the senses. - Compare and contrast characters and events in the story. - Practice sequencing of events. Topics Covered: - Story Elements - Text Evidence - Vocabulary - Sequencing - Comparing and Contrasting Teaching Style: - The teacher will read an age appropriate book each week for students to learn with. - Students will get to interact with the teacher and their peers during the read aloud. - The teacher will prompt students with questions and encourage each other to answer and provide each other feedback. Books: **Week 1: Dates: 5/6-5/9 --- Topic - Sequencing** "Meesha Makes Friends" by Tom Percival **Week 2: Dates: 5/13-5/16 --- Topic - Rhyming Words** "The Wonky Donkey" by Craig Smith **Week 3: Dates: 5/20-5/23 --- Topic - Comparing and Contrasting** "You Are Enough" by Margaret O'Hair **Week 4: Dates: 6/3-6/6 --- Topic - Words and phrases that suggest feelings** "The Boy with the Big, Big Feelings" by Britney Winn Lee **Week 5: Dates: 6/10-6/13 --- Topic - Problem and Solution** "Speak Up, Molly Lou Melon" by Patty Lovell **Week 6: Dates: 6/17-6/20 --- Topic - Vocabulary and Text Evidence** "Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon" by Patty Lovell **Week 7: Dates: 6/24-6/27 --- Topic - Story Elements (Characters, Plot, and Setting)** "I Wanna New Room" by Karen Kaufman Orloff Frequency: - Each week I will have three separate readings of the same book on separate days to discuss the same topics in order to make the class more available in case you have to miss one day!
