Excited About: Chat GPT Create a Book Report

Class
In this class, 14-18 year old students will learn how to use Chat GPT to write a book report and other reports, essays and more while also discovering ways to enhance their report and truly understand the material, rather than just cheating. This is not just a simple technology.

Description

Class Experience

Students will learn how to write a book report using Chat Gpt
Students will advance in the Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning from knowledge about the Chat GPT book report creation, to analyzing how it could be helpful to them to learn, to evaluating the content creation and enhancements made to their report, to synthesizing how they could use Chat Gpt for other projects.
I have been doing research in education and other fields for the past 40 years or so. I was on the internet when it first started as a text mode, called, Lynx. Side note: I watched and participated in search engine strategies through NASA in Houston as a teacher in about 1995 when I happened to catch sight of Tom Hanks as he was filming, Apollo 13. I have been using technology as a college student with the use of microcomputers since the Commodore Vic-20 in about 1982, to IBM compatible personal computers in 1989, Apple computers and using the Internet for distance learning as a graduate student in the late 1990s. Once I found out what Chat Gpt can do, I am an eager participant in writing a novel for the future about the cross section of three individuals in the late 1800s and their influence on slavery, abolition, women’s rights, civil rights and the rights of minorities in our culture.
No Homework is assigned, but I would love to have students send me their finished book report and feedback they received from their teacher about it and the process of using Chat Gpt.

Learners will be given a pass for their participation in the class. If students don’t participate I won’t be able to commend them. However, even shy kids should think this process is pretty fantastic.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The process of using Chat Gpt will allow the student to surpass their grade level capability by staggering amounts. Whether they choose to disclose how they did this project will be up to them. Many schools are banning student use of Chat Gpt and other artificial intelligent engines; however, isn’t the use of spreadsheets as a technology allowing the student to achieve something more than they could have done by pencil and paper or with a calculator. I see this use as an enhancement to their learning process. If all a student does is ask Chat Gpt to write the book report and not look at results, but just hand it in to the teacher, then they would have failed to learn. If all they want is a better grade on the book report, then they have missed out on a learning event in their life that may stimulate further research and investigation into numerous topics and areas that motivates them to learn more.
I am not working at this to show them a way to cheat the system. My goal is to motivate them to see the potential for their own knowledge growth. If students see their part in providing input into the AI and making a better project, they may be persuaded to use it with confidence and be able to tell others the process they take in creativity on their project.
Chat Gpt is an online artificial intelligence engine that has the capacity to create many different types of documents.
The student will need to be able to get online and use this resource. At present, their is no charge to use Chat Gpt, but in the future it may have a cost associated with its use.
