Class experience
Before we meet online, learners taking this tutoring course and their parents will determine which skills and/or concepts we should concentrate on. Here are some, but by no means all, of the topics we could look at: - German pronunciation; - common, everyday expressions and phrases; - improving your conversational German; - improving your written German; - honing your listening skills; - reading comprehension; - giving oral presentations auf Deutsch; - mastering aspects of German grammar...
I'll structure this course in a "spiraling" fashion, the way I used to put together my German classes in middle school and high school, meaning that I won't just cover a subject once, but often come back to it and delve into it more deeply. For example, in one session I'll introduce the numbers 0 to 20; in the next lesson I'll review that and also talk about all of the numbers from 0 to 100. As the course develops, I'll use German as much as possible so that participants can feel more comfortable with the language. In this type of tutoring it's important that the learning is willing to speak with me and take an active part in the lesson so that the materials and skills being presented can be absorbed and mastered. The learner will need to participate actively during each lesson, interacting with me. Here, tentatively, is what each session will cover: 1. Deutschlandlabor (Deutsche Welle) Episode Zehn; communicative German exercises; da- and wo-compounds 2. Completion of DL episode; communicative German exercises; review of written work 3.Deutschlandlabor (Deutsche Welle) Episode Elf; da- and wo-compounds 4. Completion of DL episode; communicative German exercises; review of written work 5. Deutschlandlabor (Deutsche Welle) Episode Zwölf; conjunctions 6. As the son of German parents who immigrated to the States, I grew up speaking German and later learned it formally in high school and at the university. Later on I was fortunate to live Germany for several years, for three years as a guest student at two state universities and then as an English instructor in different public schools for three more years. I began tutoring German in the late Seventies and then taught the language in public schools from 1985 to 2016, when I retired. Since my retirement I've organized online courses for college-age students and adults that are typically focused on exam preparation (e.g., the B1 exam) and Business German. I've been teaching younger learners on Outschool since early in 2021.
In general, I'll share materials in the OS classroom for learners to use. We may draw on videos on the Deutsche Welle website; if we do so, I'll provide those videos in the OS classroom as well.
When I retired in 2016 after more than thirty years in California classrooms, I figured that my days of teaching were pretty much behind me. As it turned out, though, that assumption was completely off the mark. I soon started teaching online...
