Class Experience

This class is a combination of my Amazing Alphabet and Literacy class and Marvelous Math class. I also offer these classes separately for students who are not developmentally ready for a 40 minute class.

Amazing Alphabet and Literacy-These are the topics we will study during the reading portion of the class.

*Alphabet and phonemic awareness
We will have an in-depth study of each letter of the alphabet and the phonetic sound. We will practice writing the letters. Students will listen to a letter book to go along with the letter that we are learning. Students will explore and learn the letters through hands-on and engaging activities that utilize all modes of learning. Students will have numerous phonological awareness activities. We will clap words, syllables, and learn how to recognize and make rhymes.

*Reading and Literacy
Each week I will introduce a new story. Students will discuss the story and I will reread the story every day. During the week we will discuss unfamiliar vocabulary words found in the story. I will ask questions to help with comprehension. Each week we will focus on one text and each day look closely at that text. This class will include activities for oral language, phonological awareness, print awareness, whole-group reading, and follow-up practice sheets. We will build interest on the topic of the story, make predictions, answer essential questions and cold read. Students will build knowledge of unknown vocabulary and perform simple recall activities. We will discuss story elements, such as main idea and characters. Students will learn print awareness. We will learn concepts of print, title, author, illustrator, and environmental print. Students will also practice retelling the stories.

Each week we will have a category of vocabulary words to study. These words will be on top of the vocabulary words found in the context of the book. I will show vocabulary picture cards, discrimination cards, expansion of verbal vocabulary and following one and two-step directions using the words.

These are the books that we will study during the literacy portion of the class.

Marvelous Math
In this semester long pre-k math course students will learn important preschool math concepts through songs, rhymes, finger plays, stories and activities.
