Everything Is a Poem: Poetry Inspired by Everyday Things

This class is all about Poetry. Learners will explore the poetic concept of turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. The class will start with a short history and explanation of poetry. Then the class will look at some examples of poems that turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. The class will brainstorm ideas of things they can write about. Students will learn to see the world like a poet does. Students will look at ordinary things and make them extraordinary. Students will practice writing a poem using this technique.
I have a BA in Creative Writing. I have been writing Poetry for fun since middle school. As a teacher one of my favorite subjects to teach is writing. I am especially fond of Poetry because you can say so much with so little. The poetry technique I am teaching in this class is one I use myself often.
Homework Offered
Optional: Students may turn in their final poem.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be assessed on participation in class discussion. Students will be assessed on final poem if they choose to turn it in.Grades Offered
Teacher will provide handout about poetry technique. Teacher will also provide copy of brainstorm after class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Single Learner Classes: - Single learner classes will go ahead as scheduled unless learner and family request otherwise. - If the lesson ends early, learners will have writing time at the end of class.
