US Grade 4 - 6
This class is all about Poetry. Learners will explore the poetic concept of turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. The class will start with a short history and explanation of poetry. Then the class will look at some examples of poems that turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. The class will brainstorm ideas of things they can write about. As a group, the class will then brainstorm ways to describe these ideas. The last part of class will include time for learners to write independently. During this time teacher will be available to answer questions. Prior Knowledge: How to use chat feature of Zoom - During writing time all mikes will be muted, learners and teacher will communicate using chat box to minimize distractions.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to see the world like a poet does.
Students will look at ordinary things and make them extraordinary.
Students will practice writing a poem using this technique.

Parental Guidance
Single Learner Classes:
- Single learner classes will go ahead as scheduled unless learner and family request otherwise.
- If the lesson ends early, learners will have writing time at the end of class.
Supply List
Teacher will provide handout about poetry technique. Teacher will also provide copy of brainstorm after class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I have a BA in Creative Writing. I have been writing Poetry for fun since middle school.
As a teacher one of my favorite subjects to teach is writing. I am especially fond of Poetry because you can say so much with so little.
The poetry technique I am teaching in this class is one I use myself often.
