45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Horse-crazy kids will learn how to identify and properly care for parts of English tack used in hunter-jumper and dressage styles of riding. All of this equipment can be quite confusing! We will talk about the purpose of each piece as we take apart, clean and reassemble bridles, saddles, girths and more. I teach the secret to unbuckling all of those stubborn straps and how to 'use your head' to put them back where they belong. We will discuss how safe equipment can be expensive and needs to be looked after so it lasts. We will use a combination of video clips and lively, relaxed, open discussion throughout the class to help everyone be comfortable and become more knowledgeable horsepeople. This class is open to learners with all levels of experience - no horse or equipment needed.
Learning Goals
Students will gain a better understanding of how to name, use and care for parts of English leather tack. We will discuss the investment involved in accruing safe equipment needed to ride and work with horses so that they can begin making a budget and planning for th efuture.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a terrific life passion that I love to pursue and share. My days are packed with Outschool classes on Everything Horse!, teaching English to students in China, tutoring in local elementary schools, teaching horseback riding lessons and riding/competing. Students come to class for a lively, laughter-filled, interactive discussion supported by practical experience and science. Our classroom and in-barn lessons explore ways to enjoy and care for horses on the ground and while riding. Learners of all levels are welcome -- from pony-crazy kids to competitive riders in all disciplines. While I have a B.A. in Journalism from University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, I owe a debt to 4-H. I acquired a strong foundation of equine knowledge, public speaking, team competition and best friends for life. I am a certified Pressure Proof mentor that allows me to coach others through their anxiety to become confident equestrians. I use these sports psychology strategies in my own riding and competitions where my excellent coaches keep me striving for improvement. I look forward to passing on this valuable information to your kids. Everyone will meet the real star of the show: my adopted Thoroughbred ex-racehorse, Rally!
