Class Experience

The aim of this class is to provide the students confidence that they have the ability to use mental arithmetic in everyday situations. The students will follow the story of Jo who gets a job to earn money to buy a pair of Vans. They will use addition, subtraction, multiplication and percentages without using a calculator. An important element of this class is the discussion over how the student worked out their answer – each person has a way of working it out and no one way is right.

Students will learn how they individually work through a maths problem and will be able to see how they can use simple maths in everyday life.

The student will be asked to create a story that uses the same format and provide the answers to the maths questions they include.

A pen or pencil plus paper.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
