Homework
Students will need to spend some time practicing what we've covered in class each week.Class Experience
My guitar and ukulele lessons have always been about my students. What kind of music makes them happy? How can I teach technique and skills using the songs and styles of music they love. By making connections with my students and learning what makes them smile, practising is a breeze and they get the happiness and confidence that comes from playing an instrument. We begin with navigating our way around the guitar - especially when learning remotely, knowing which way is up is very important! In our first lesson, we will learn the chords A, D & E, and be able to play a simple song using good technique. I've also never had a student in 25 years who hasn't had their vocals improve as a side effect ;) I really like to focus on songs the students are interested in, so the first lesson is an important time for finding out where their interests lie! I send lesson materials via pdf at least the day before each lesson to be printed off at home. Viewing on a screen is possible, so long as there's the option to annotate.
Learning Goals
Students will learn open guitar chords and how they work together in music, how to read tablature and chord diagrams, and simple finger picking patterns.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from University Of Waikato (Hamilton New Zealand)
Hi, I'm Kathleen. Mum of two, Kiwi in Canada, Excitable about sharing my love of music with my piano, guitar & ukulele students.
My musical life began when I was three and started Suzuki piano lessons. At ten I took up guitar, and realised that I could sing - life changing things for a very shy kiddo. Whether playing for fun on my own, joining a rock band, playing Irish music, or getting onstage and playing lead roles in musical theatre, I can't even measure the skills, confidence, and friendships I've gained from my involvement with music.
I studied Music Education at the University of Waikato, and being a qualified teacher as well as a musician gives me a unique approach where connection is as important as technique. My mission is to encourage my students to create music for the pure joy of it; so if you're looking to go down an examination path, I'm not the teacher for you.
I would love to use my 23 years of experience, and my sincere love of music, to start your child on their own musical journey.
