Clarify your understanding of the Medieval world of Europe and improve your historical analysis skills through this exploration of the Middle Ages. I love to teach students to "do" history, so we will discuss how to evaluate primary documents and then practice these skills in the context of the class discussion. This course is an 4 week exploration of the Middle Ages in Europe. This course is stand alone or students can begin with my Ancient Civilizations course and Classical World course, and then follow with my Renaissance course for a further chronological study of Western Civilization. In this course, we will look at social, political, and economic life in the European Middle Ages through the early Renaissance. In class, we will actively discuss and evaluate primary sources related to the time period. Students will be offered primary document reading outside of class, as well as writing assignments related to the topic. All texts will be provided for the students. This is a self-paced version of my Middle Ages course. This course will offer no live class meetings. Instead, your student will have access to a class recording weekly to watch, as well as additional written and visual documents to augment the recording. We will create a healthy discussion through messages to engage with the contents of the recordings. The student will also have various quizzes and interactive assignments to check their understanding of the video content, creating a workshop feel during the 4 weeks. Also each week, students will have an opportunity to complete their own longer writing assignments related to the class content and to receive individualized teacher feedback. I also recommend students take my evaluating primary documents 1 day course prior to or concurrent with this course. What to expect from this course: -develop an understanding of the politics, economics, and social life of the Middle Ages -strengthen your skills at primary text analysis -engage in discussion about the worldview of the Middle Ages
Learning Goals
Students will improve their skills at reading primary documents, while exploring the themes and context of Europe in the Middle Ages.
