In this multi-day class, students will learn how to decipher new vocabulary words using the root and prefix. This class is an introductory course to etymology. Etymology is a powerful tool in language because it can help us guess the meaning of a word even though we may have not seen the word before. By studying prefixes and roots, we can broaden our vocabulary and figure out the meaning of new words. In this class, we will study origins of words and will be able to define words based on what...
Students will be able to figure out the meaning of new words based on roots and prefixes. Students will have a basic understanding of what etymology is and why it is important.
I've always been interested in etymology as I am an avid reader and English-lover. I studied etymology at the university level and have my bachelor's degree in English and journalism.
Students will have 2 worksheets to complete. Worksheet #1 is due at the start of class 2 and worksheet #2 is due at the start of class 4.
Students will need to complete the attached PDFs.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will be giving feedback to students on their homework.
1 hour 10 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
