Curious about how to answer the infamous "How many piano tuners are there in the city of Chicago?" interview question? Many companies ask Fermi questions in interviews because they demonstrate how well a candidate can break down a problem and identify what further information they will need to answer the question. Fermi estimation is also a key skill for scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers of all kinds. Fermi questions (also known as Fermi problems, Fermi estimates, or order...
Fermi estimation (and more broadly, dimensional analysis) was one of the most important skills I learned as a mechanical engineer at MIT, and one I still use daily in my personal life (when should I buy more flour?) as well as in my work at manufacturing plants (how quickly should we run this machine?). I believe it is a key skill that it is never too early to learn, because thoroughly understanding the technique enables people to be better scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers in general.
