Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Advanced Level
This advanced essay course offers students the opportunity to engage in independent, in-depth research on a topic of personal interest, fostering practical preparation for future academic research and writing. Building on skills developed in Essentials for Reluctant Writers I and II, students will select a research topic related to one of their core academic subjects or explore an interdisciplinary theme.

Throughout the semester, students will:

-Formulate a focused and compelling research question
-Engage in a personal, sustained exploration of their chosen topic
-Communicate complex ideas effectively in writing
-Develop and support a clear, evidence-based argument
-Analyze, synthesize, and critically evaluate information

Students will receive individualized guidance from the instructor, who will serve as a research advisor. Three reflection sessions will guide students through the research and writing process, with the final session—a concluding interview—encouraging students to reflect on their growth and articulate their work.

This course equips students with essential research, writing, and critical thinking skills, providing valuable experience for future university studies and interviews for academic or professional opportunities.

Students do not have to have completed Essentials for Reluctant Writers, Semester I or II before they can take Essentials for Reluctant Writers, Semester III. This semester is designed to stand on its own. By the end of the semester, my hope is that you will have the tools to write with confidence, even if writing is not your first love.

If your learner would feel more comfortable in a one-on-one tutoring setup for this class, I'm more than happy to accommodate! You can check out my listing for Middle & High School English Language Arts Tutoring 1:1, and if you're interested, we can work together to find a day and time that suits your schedule. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Note: This course is inspired by the structure of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Extended Essay but is not affiliated with the IB program.

Learning Goals

My goal is to train students to take a close look at their writing so they are prepared to write well in the future. We will spend time with self-editing checklists and peer review. Reading our writing aloud helps us to learn how to support each other.

I have been teaching English Language Arts for over 20 years. MSt Literature and Arts University of Oxford, 2025. Some of my students have been natural writers who innately understand the process and the "sound" of good writing, while others have struggled to get their great ideas out of their heads and onto paper. I enjoy the process with both and encourage strengths as well as support weaknesses.
