Students will compete a brief math survey using Google Forms to find out the level of math you are currently at. We will do practice questions along the way to assess understanding.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 6
The class will be structured into two sections: learning strategies for solving word problems and then applied practice. The word problems can be solved using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will go through several questions step-by-step in order to solve them together before students practise on their own. An example of a strategy we will use is highlighting key terms and determining how to know which operation is needed to solve the problem using specific vocabulary terms e.g., rates, times, or areas in the question mean multiplication is needed to solve it. For applied, hands-on practice questions, students will be using Google Jamboard.
Learning Goals
Student learning goals:
To be able to recognize when addition, subtraction, multiplication or division is needed to solve a word problem.
To be able to apply several different successful strategies when faced with a word problem.
