US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
If you feel your child could use some extra help preparing for grade school this is the class for you. This is a fun ongoing skills group that will help teach your child lessons over language mastery, social skills, phonics, numbers, letters, shapes, money, and weather. We will also use fun games, quizzes, stories and interactive activities to help learn the skills every grade schooler needs. These essential skills are designed help support and teach young children everything they need to be ready for the next level. I will use entertaining visual aids, puppets, flash cards, felt boards, and books to learn the topics. Because of time missed in school, many parents today are worried their child are not prepared for the next level. This class will help prepare and reinforce your child needs to be successful. I have a professional teaching license and have spent over 13 years teaching and training students of all ages to be successful. -Classes will be quick and engaging (30 minutes each). Students will not sit through long, boring, endless lectures. Instead, lessons will be interactive, informative, and lively. Each week classes will have one main topic to explore, however, each day we will cover multiple topics in order to reinforce continuous learning. -Week 1, and the first week of every month after that, our focus theme will be on a different aspect related to social skills. Each day, we will practice social development skills by learning how to introduce ourselves at the beginning of class. Sometimes we will use a song to go along with the greeting. At the beginning of the week we select the welcoming committee. This consists of 1-3 students who are responsible for welcoming students to the class using greetings they have learned from class. If a new student starts, the welcoming committee makes sure they feel welcome through positive encouragement. We will discuss how to be polite to others and the importance of treating others with kindness. This helps to promote a healthy sense of community within the classroom. Next, we will go over the essential social skill of the week. I will use a visual aid board, slide show, or game to help identify the skill. -Week 2, and starting the second week of every month we will focus on different aspects of numbers. Students will review how to skip count, read a clock, and add up the value of money. I will use actual money for students to identify and add. There will be some basic level math during this time as well. Sometimes we will learn the months and learn to count the days of the calendar. I ask that they each have something to write with each day because sometimes I'll ask the class to write letters, numbers, or draw. -Wk 3, (the third week of the month) the theme will be based on letters and phonics. I will introduce a letter from the alphabet each day of the week. Next, we will do activities based on the letter like the basic phonics of the sound it makes, it's rules, and how to write it. Sometimes we will listen to a story or an interactive video that incorporates the letter of the day. I will also use animals associated with the letter as a fun way to learn the sounds. -Wk 4, (the fourth week) we will focus on shapes everything associated with them. The class will learn all kinds of two dimensional and three dimensional shapes. We will learn how to pronounce some of the more difficult names and discuss what objects they see in everyday life that relate to that shape. Friday's will be our "Show and Tell" Day. This is where students are able to bring anything they want to share with the others. This can be a toy, a favorite pet, a drawing, etc. The purpose of this activity has multiple levels. Students will learn social skills through this by learning how to share and to wait their turn to speak . Students will relate their object back to the letters we learned that week and explain what shape it most closely resembles. -At the end of class each day, we will play a game or sing a song that helps children end their class time in a happy and fun way. After class, I will send some kind of optional activity to parents to print out for their child. This includes but not limited to: coloring activities, color, cut, and paste, or connect the dots activities based on the daily lesson. The repetitive identification of the skills will help the students to remember the skill and how to use it.
