𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬?

Students often wonder why learning to write an essay on a piece of literature is valuable or necessary. After all, they may not want to study literature after high school. It's a good question! The critical thinking required to write an organized, well-designed, and effectively argued piece of writing prepares them for all the writing they must do in college. Did you know that the skills mastered in writing an analysis of a piece of literature prepare learners to communicate about various STEM fields? Analytical writing is the key to having success in other disciplines. Even though we use literature, it's not necessarily about the literature. They are learning to think and to communicate and to put forth a logical argument, defended by evidence and analysis.

🥰 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞:

1. Learners compare literary analysis to a sports announcer and a cooking show! Then, they watch a short narrative sketch, and the teacher models how to write an analytical response.

2. Learners read and discuss a short piece of literature in class.

3. Finally, students learn how to write a critical response.

4. Learners finish their short piece for homework. The teacher gives feedback.

𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬--The back-and-forth work between a student and teacher significantly benefits a student if it is done well. We follow best practices in this area with how we design class time, assignments, and routines. According to Pennington Publishing, effective writing feedback (or grading) is:
• Specific, not general
• Immediate, not postponed
• Routine with a revision / feedback cycle
• Explanatory
• The right amount
• Targeted to the most critical issues
• Varied (written, audio, and video comments)
• Holding students accountable
