Essay Writing Preparation: The ‘Hamburger’ Paragraph (Self-Paced)

This course will teach the 'hamburger' paragraph method along with the basic structure for an essay (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion).

 Week 1
Lesson 1
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡
Students will be introduced to the structure of writing a paragraph. We will work on topic sentences, supporting details, and the closing sentence. Students will practice identifying the different parts in a paragraph. Students will select a prompt and submit their paragraph. Assignment #1: Select one prompt and submit paragraph. Students will receive a review on their work.
Lesson 2
Extended Practice
Students will be given a paragraph worksheet to help them identify the parts of a paragraph. Students will choose another prompt and share their work by posting in the classroom. During this week, students will be asked to share their work and read one another’s work. This will allow them to share ideas and suggestions and practice peer reviews.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐲
Students will learn how to structure the introduction and conclusion. Introduction: (the hook/attention-getter) and writing a thesis statement. Conclusion: I will teach the 'upside-down' introduction method. Students will learn about the basic outline format. The students will be given three options for their writing prompt. Students will complete and submit a three-paragraph essay.
Students will learn how to structure the three paragraphs needed for an essay (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion).
Students will learn learn about the different sentences used in each paragraph.
Students will learn the importance of the thesis statement.
Students will have the opportunity to edit and revise their work.
Homework Offered
Students will complete two body paragraphs, one three paragraph essay, and a final revision of their essay.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be given a brief review for their paragraphs and feedback with a rubric on their essay.
Grades Offered
The final essay will receive a percentage and letter grade.
All material will be provided by the instructor.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
