Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
Beginner Level
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁? In this class, students will learn to write a five-paragraph essay.
We will learn the following structure-an introductory paragraph to introduce the main topic or thesis, followed by three body paragraphs to support the thesis or main idea, and a concluding paragraph to wrap up the points made in the essay. Students will choose their own topics for individual essays after the first class assignment.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱? The first class will be an introduction where we will learn what a thesis is, and how to find information to support your thesis. We will discuss what plagiarism is, and how to avoid it. An initial essay will be assigned.
The second class will be a review of the student's research for their initial essay. Recommendations and tips will be given for completion. A rubric for evaluating the essay will be provided and discussed so that students can begin to self-assess their writing. For homework, students will complete the essay and submit it for review by the teacher, prior to the next class.
Each week thereafter, Students will review their essays at the first class and choose their next topic. At the second class, they will present their research, ask questions, receive guidance on their writing. Essays will be submitted no later than Saturday, each week, in order for to have time to review all before the class.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲? I present information in an informal lecture style with visuals and allowing for questions. Each student's work will be assessed individually. Students are encouraged to speak in class, ask questions, share relevant information and choose topics of interest to themselves. A rubric will be used to assess student's writing. Praise is given for effort and good work. Students are encouraged to do their best. Students learn best when they feel like their efforts are appreciated.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 (𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲: 𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀, 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀, 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻)? Students are encouraged to respond to each other's essays. Some small group discussions may take place when there are enough students in an individual class to allow for groups. All classes are accompanied by a Powerpoint presentation, so there are focal points for students who learn best visually. Classes are very "hands on" with interaction encouraged during all segments of class.
𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱? Students must be able to write legibly or type their essays. They should be able to read at a third grade level or higher.

Teaching writing skills, is something I have especially enjoyed. Creative writing, technical writing and journaling are all things I write and enjoy. I teach English as a second language and teaching writing skills to non-English speaking students is especially challenging, giving me plenty of practice in instructing children in the art of writing. I hold a degree in Elementary education and have taught grades 2-5 in both public and private schools. I have numerous published articles as a former newsletter editor and as a freelance ghost-writer.
