ABOUT THIS CLASS:

Students will walk away with tried and true writing techniques that we have taught to middle and high schoolers in my brick and mortar classrooms for years. If students complete the assignments, they will be able to write excellent high school level essays.

We provide written feedback on student's work every week so that they can learn how to express their ideas with skill and confidence, while mastering the ins and outs of academic essay writing.

In this class, we teach a specific essay writing technique or tip each week and students will either write from scratch, revise their writing, or add on to it, using what they learned.

We have taught these tips and techniques to students of all backgrounds and ability levels in our combined 20+ years of teaching in public, private, homeschooling, and online schools. Students will find the class directly applicable to their middle school and high school writing assignments.

This is a great class for students who are either highly creative or reluctant writers (or both!) and looking to establish foundational skills in essay writing.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Mr. Grissom delivers the instruction in weekly recorded lessons to be watched at your convenience. You watch and complete the written assignments each week, and Mrs. Gallagher provides the written feedback on your work every week (in Google Docs).

This is a self-paced schedule class, which means there are no live meetings. Each lesson contains a recorded lesson that is 20-45 minutes long. Each video will include instruction, examples, and short assignments for students.

Students will then complete their written assignment for the lesson (we suggest 1 lesson per week) which will take 20-45 minutes depending on the ability of the student. Students will post their work--ranging from making an outline to writing a portion of their essay--in Google Docs and post the link for me to comment on and provide feedback.

We will cover mostly argumentative/persuasive and literary analysis essays, as these make up most assignments in middle and high school writing programs.

Students should have access to Google Docs and I will sometimes ask students to share their screen to share their writing.

The following is a schedule of our weekly focus, subject to change pending the needs of the students:

Lesson 1- outlines for essays
Lesson 2- essay structure
Lesson 3- thesis statements
Lesson 4- topic sentences
Lesson 5- putting it all together
Lesson 6- gathering and incorporating evidence
Lesson 7- citing evidence
Lesson 8- analyzing evidence
Lesson 9- introductions and conclusions
Lesson 10- literary essay part 1
Lesson 11-literary essay part 2
Lesson 12- review: speed essay

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

⭐ DANIEL GRISSOM, Founder of Curious Together:
With fifteen years of experience teaching in schools around the world, Daniel knows what it takes to nurture a child's imagination, talents, and unique, creative voice. In 2021, he left the brick and mortar classroom to make more room for the things he loves most--art, family, and teaching children in ways unbounded by traditional schooling. And in 2022, he founded Curious Together and his online cartooning program Kids Cartoon Academy. He has a Master’s Degree in English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University (NYC) and knows what it takes to cultivate a child’s imagination and develop their skills. He has taught over 2000 students in his online classes within the last two years. He uses scientifically proven methods to create a fun and engaging classroom that invites students to deep learning and transformative results. When he's not teaching, you'll find him drawing (of course), reading, watching sports, smoking barbecue, traveling, running his online art store, or being silly with his wife and two daughters.

📚 JOANNA GALLAGHER, Literacy Expert: Joanna Gallagher firmly believes that, with the right tools and foundational skills, essay writing doesn’t have to be scary–it can even be fun! With a bachelor’s degree in both English and History and a master’s degree in English Literary Studies, she has long been passionate about the importance of interdisciplinary study and the value of the humanities in the “real world” beyond the classroom. She has over 7 years experience providing writing support and instruction across a wide scope of ages, abilities, and environments–everything from working with college students in a Writing Center, to teaching 9th grade English in a traditional classroom, to tutoring homeschoolers in composition and grammar. She cares deeply about creating spaces and structures that encourage and empower students to grow in confidence as readers, clarity as communicators, and–most importantly–curiosity as thinkers and lifelong learners. Outside of teaching, she enjoys reading and writing for fun (yes, really),gardening, photography, traveling, and being outdoors as much as possible with her husband and two energetic toddlers.
