Description
Class Experience
This class is taught in English.
Students will learn the basics of essay writing. Students will learn the difference between "tell" essays and "sell" essays. Students will learn the difference between direct and indirect approaches. Students will learn how to construct a paragraph. Students will learn how to develop a thesis. Students will learn how to write a topic sentence. Students will learn how to inform and persuade. Students will learn how to use transitional words (Therefore, however, moreover, etc.). Students will learn the difference between connotation and denotation. Students will learn how to edit their work. Students will learn the four rules of Grice (quantity, quality, manner, and relation). Students will learn about tone. Students will learn about fit, form, and function. Students will learn about logical fallacies.
I am a book author and former journalist who was also a Communications/Language Studies professor at Conestoga College and Mohawk College.
Students will hand in a 500-800 word final essay at the end of the course; however, each week, they will hand in an assignment related to their final project. Students should spend one hour a week on each assignment. Week 1: Essay topic Week 2: Arguments to be made in essay Week 3: Rough draft of essay Week 4: Final essay
A letter grade and written report are included in the course.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
