Writing an essay can be a time-consuming slog, especially when you first start out! In this class, I walk students through the process of writing an essay from beginning to end, arming them with tricks and tools to do it quickly and effectively, without sacrificing quality or content. During class time, I use a combination of slides, videos, examples, writing exercises, and their own essay project, so students get hands-on practice of the process, ensuring their understanding of the techniques they're learning. I will cover: Structure Thesis Brainstorming Outline Paragraphs Research Quote Integration Transitions Introduction and Conclusion Bibliography And answer any questions the students may have in the process!
Learning Goals
Essay writing is a skill that is often underdeveloped, leaving students feeling overwhelmed and lost. By the end of the course, students will understand the basic elements of an essay and how to effectively put them together to produce high-quality work. They will learn the function of a thesis statement, different brainstorming techniques and how to use them to form a thesis, how to write an outline, how to structure a paragraph, how to find scholarly sources and avoid non-reputable ones, how to integrate their research into their argument, how to use transition phrases, and how to write introductions, conclusions, and bibliographies.
