Class Experience

Essay writing is a skill that is often underdeveloped, leaving students feeling overwhelmed and lost. By the end of the course, students will understand the basic elements of an essay and how to effectively put them together to produce high-quality work. They will learn the function of a thesis statement, different brainstorming techniques and how to use them to form a thesis, how to write an outline, how to structure a paragraph, how to find scholarly sources and avoid non-reputable ones, how to integrate their research into their argument, how to use transition phrases, and how to write introductions, conclusions, and bibliographies.
I was known for my excellent essay-writing skills during my undergraduate degree, and I have spent the years since then sussing out the very best ways to pass on that knowledge. I have taught this class many times in real life, with excellent results.
At the end of the course, students will have produced an essay, to be submitted after the last class. In order to achieve this, they will spend some time outside of class writing and researching.
The student will be required to choose a topic to write an essay on, so they should come to class with a favourite book that they have consistent access too (i.e. not borrowed and needing to be returned until after the course is finished).
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Essays will be marked and returned shortly after the completion of the course, but most of the work will be done during class with my assistance. Since the goal of the course is to learn techniques and tricks to make writing essays easier, their final product should reflect an understanding of the basic principles of essay writing as discussed in class.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
