Essay Writing 301: Research Essays for Grades 6-8

In this 10-week class, we will learn how to write longer essays and how to find reputable sources for research papers. Students should have a good grasp of the five-paragraph essay before enrolling in this class. (See: Essay Writing 201)

Description

Class Experience

This class is meant to break students out of the box of the five-paragraph essay. An essay that is truly only five paragraphs long can rarely be more than one page, and students will need to break out of this box in order to complete middle school and high school writing assignments. 

We will spend the first class reviewing the five-paragraph essay. We will discuss how limiting yourself to only five paragraphs can actually make writing research papers harder. For Week 2, we will talk about...

I have an MFA in Creative Writing, for which I took courses in teaching English Composition. I have five years of experience teaching writing to elementary and middle schoolers in afterschool settings, as well as one-on-one tutoring for reading and writing.

No office homework, but some students may need extra time outside of class to finish their essay on time. Students will have some time to write their essays during each class, and there will be two dedicated work days just for researching and writing. Kids are busy, and many of my students attend a public or private school in addition to taking Outschool classes. For this reason, I incorporate supervised work time into each class.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

No assessment. If your child requires an official assessment, please message me on Outschool before the class begins and I can send you an letter grade and/or written report privately.
