Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Beginner - Intermediate Level
The initial class will spend time getting to know the student and assessing their current comfort level with the subject. This can include discussing history with the material, their favorite study techniques, practice problems, reviewing past work, and conversations on topics they enjoy outside of school.

As a tutor, I prefer to use the Socratic method of learning to help meet students where they are at. I will never just give a student the answer. Instead, our tutoring sessions will function more as a conversation in which we work together to come to the solution of crafting beautiful essays.

I enjoy bringing the student’s interests into learning. If a student is a fan of math, we can work on seeing writing as another math equation! If the student is interested in video games, comic books, novels, or movies, we can analyze those works to see what worked best in the writing for those media!

48 hours before the class, I ask that the student sends me any specific pieces of writing they want to cover, or a subject they would like to cover. This will help me organize the appropriate materials for the class! If they are not actively working on an essay, but would like further assistance, we can analyze past works, popular media, or practice our study and outlining skills!

I will be reviewing essays for the following and lessons will be based on:

Clarity (Do I understand what you are trying to say? Is your sentence relevant to the topic?)

Punctuation (Does each sentence have the proper punctuation? Are you using commas, semicolons, dashes, and colons correctly?)

Organization (Where is your thesis statement located? Does each paragraph explore a new idea?)

Spelling (Are there minimal spelling errors? Are we using the correct choice for words such as to, too, and two?)

Relevancy (Does your essay reflect the goal of the assignment?)

Learning Goals

Students will become confident writers.
Students will be able to understand their intended audience and craft their language in a way best suited to them.
