US Grade 6 - 9
This course is perfect for students who are familiar and comfortable with the essay-writing process, but who want or need more practice. It's also a good way for students to identify areas of weakness, learn new writing skills, and hone their writing powers. If your student is just beginning to write essays, I suggest my course The Five-Paragraph Expository Essay, as this course assumes that the student can already write a full essay. During the first class, students will identify their topic (they will be describing a person, place or thing, such as a meal), brainstorm ideas, and create a thesis. For this essay, students must meet certain requirements in their body paragraphs, including the use of alliteration and personification, and they must use at least two styles of sentence openers in each paragraph. The homework for the first class will be to complete the three body paragraphs for their essay. The instructor will offer critiques on submitted paragraphs. The second class will also focus on composing the introduction and conclusion. All submitted essays will receive a full evaluation from the instructor for content, style, and grammar.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
My passion -- as well as my professional background -- is writing. Professionally, I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I've been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. I've also taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages and abilities.
On a personal note, I have homeschooled all five of my children and taught them all to read and write... and with each it has been a different experience! What's easy for one child is not easy for another. When I teach online, I always remember that it's important to keep learning fun and to incorporate different methods of teaching to reach all my students.
