2-4 hours per week. Classes 1 and 2 will be instruction on the basics of paragraph and essay writing. Beginning with week 3, learners will be assigned the type of essay lectured on and discussed in class, which will be due at the beginning of the following class. The instructor will explain the format of each essay in class before it is assigned. The final essay should be uploaded to the instructor as a word document or a pages (apple) document. Google docs are okay as long as the instructor is given permission to edit ahead of time. The instructor will explain how and where to upload the essay during the first class. This class is for an English grade. The instructor holds a BA in English, Literature, and Culture and a MA in English. He is highly qualified to offer a legitimate grade for the course.Assessment
All essays will be professionally graded by the instructor and returned to the student with suggestions on how to improve. If the student improves the essay and resubmits it. The improved essay will be returned to the student on the final day of class and that learner will receive extra credit. Grading these essays is extremely time consuming since I do actually read every single word. I usually spend two hours grading for every one hour of class time. I will endeavor to grade each essay in a timely manner.Grading

US Grade 6 - 9
Week 1: We will begin with sentence construction and then continue with paragraph construction. The first day we will go over the basics of grammar and the parts of speech including what makes up a well constructed paragraph. The first assignment due the following week will be to write a paragraph from instructor given prompts. Week 2: Comma Usage and the Five Paragraph Essay: This week we will address the number one mistake I see when grading essays, which is comma usage, especially comma usage with introductory subordinate clauses, introductory prepositional phrases, and coordinating conjunctions. Second, we will learn the five paragraph essay format and how to use it to write effective essays. The homework for this week will be a worksheet featuring comma usage. Week 3: The Compare and Contrast Essay. Learners will learn and see examples of a Compare and Contrast essay. This essay uses a format similar to the Five Paragraph essay and is excellent practice leading into more formal essay writing. The Compare and Contrast essay will be due beginning of the 4th week's class. Week 4: The Argumentative Essay. Learners will learn and see examples of an Argumentative essay. Learners will use the five paragraph essay format to write this essay. The Argumentative essay will be due the beginning of the 5th week's class. Week 5: The Persuasive Essay. Learners will learn and see examples of a Persuasive essay. Learners will learn the important differences between the Argumentative essay and the Persuasive essay. Learners may use the five paragraph essay format or choose from a more SAT-like format I will discuss in this class. The Persuasive essay will be due at the beginning of the 6th week's class. Week 6: All essays will have a final due date during this class. This final class is a class to meet and address any final issues with learners' essay writing. Any late essays will need to be completed and turned in during this class. Any re-teaching may also be requested during this class. Note: If all the essays are turned in and no further instruction is needed, this final class may be shorter than 55 minutes.
Learning Goals
Learners will improve their knowledge of paragraph and essay writing. The class is designed to include essays the learner is likely to encounter again in higher learning academic classes.
