Essay Brainstorming & Organization
What's included
1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will learn a tried and true method for beginning their essay writing tasks. We will brainstorm and build an essay plan around a thesis with a graphic organizer (chart). Here is an example essay topic for the class: Is clutter sometimes okay, or should you always try to be neat? This topic, or a similar one, will include reading passages to find evidence and help us decide our thesis. We will review what a thesis is, and what makes it important in an essay, with discussion and examples. Students will be given a planning sheet to build an essay. With guidance, they will form their thesis on that planning sheet during class, and if time allows, begin to find evidence from the reading to fill in the rest of the sheet. After class, they can submit their essay for feedback on the course page. Students should enter this course with a general idea of five paragraph essay organization structure and preferably some understanding of thesis or topic sentences, but I can meet them where they are. The end goal is to apply this new skill and complete an essay after class ends. If your student submits the essay when class is finished, I will leave feedback.
Learning Goals
Students will understand the fundamental importance of planning. Students will be able to approach the task of writing an essay with a strategy and steps.
