Class Experience

US Grade 2
Beginner Level
*Hello! I have returned from a Hiatus and am taking students again! Please check out my new schedule openings!
The focus of this class will be to improve reading comprehension and writing skills according to the state standards. Although closely following these standards, each lesson will be tailored to meet the needs of the individual student. This class, as it is designed to teach at a 2nd grade level will focus on 2nd grade standards. However, if your child is behind, or ahead, the lessons will be created to challenge them appropriately. At the 2nd grade level, I will work with the student to demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English, such as capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. I will work with them on using capitals for holidays, product names, and geographic names, as well as using commas in greetings and closings of letters. I will also teach using an apostrophe to form contractions, and frequently occurring possessives. By the end of the second grade year, your child should be able to write a paragraph with a title, introductory sentence, examples that support the topic, a concluding sentence, and some correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. The types of essays we will work on include opinion writing, informative writing, and story (narrative) writing.
We will often read a passage or book together before completing an opinion or informative essay. This will be part of our writing lesson. Reading will often be incorporated into the writing curriculum. However, reading lessons will also be taught in isolation. When teaching reading at the 2nd grade level, I will be assisting the student to read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. My goal with your 2nd grade child is for them to read on level text with purpose and understanding, at the appropriate rate, and with appropriate expression, while using context to confirm or self-correct, word recognition and understanding, and rereading as necessary.
I will use a variety of resources, some self-made, to keep the attention of the student, and touch on each learning style, in order to find the method that is most appropriate for your child. I love to see the confidence in students as they become more fluent in their reading and writing skills. Indeed, these skills are a gift we can give them that will help them throughout their lifetime!
Learning Goals
Students will learn and use strategies to more efficiently read with greater fluency and comprehension. Students will learn how to write about a range of topics to suit different audiences, using the proper conventions of standard English.
