Class Experience

Intermediate Level
This 10-week course is specifically designed to guide students through every aspect of the Cambridge PET (Preliminary English Test) exam, providing them with the tools and strategies needed to succeed. As a Cambridge-certified teacher with over 15 years of experience working in International Schools with the Cambridge Steps system, I tailor each lesson to ensure students build confidence and develop strong skills in each of the exam's key areas.

What will be taught?
Students will learn essential strategies for all four exam components: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. They’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of the exam format, types of questions they’ll encounter, and how to manage their time effectively during the test. Additionally, the course focuses on language development, with plenty of practice in vocabulary, grammar, and communication skills relevant to the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

What topics will I cover?
Reading: Skimming and scanning techniques, understanding main ideas and details, interpreting meaning, and managing complex texts.
Writing: Structuring emails and messages, writing essays and short compositions, improving grammar, and expanding vocabulary.
Listening: Developing active listening skills, predicting content, identifying key information, and understanding spoken English in various accents.
Speaking: Building fluency and accuracy, practicing exam-style interviews, role-playing scenarios, and working on pronunciation and intonation.
Grammar and Vocabulary: Targeted lessons focusing on essential B1-level grammar points and expanding thematic vocabulary commonly tested on the exam.
How is the class structured?
The course is divided into weekly sessions, each focusing on a specific part of the exam. The first few weeks cover essential skills and strategies, while later sessions focus on exam practice and feedback. Each lesson is interactive, featuring a combination of instruction, group activities, and individual tasks. Weekly homework assignments reinforce the lessons, giving students the chance to practice independently and track their progress.

How will I teach?
I use a combination of direct instruction, interactive exercises, and real-life practice to help students fully engage with the material. Lessons include:

Mock exams and timed practice: Students will complete exam-style tasks under timed conditions to build familiarity and comfort with the exam.
Interactive discussions: To promote critical thinking, I encourage students to discuss answers, share insights, and reflect on their learning process.
One-on-one feedback: Personalized feedback is given on written and spoken tasks to ensure continuous improvement.
Group work: Through group discussions and peer activities, students practice their English in a collaborative environment that simulates real-life situations.
What’s my teaching style?
My teaching style is patient and supportive, with a focus on making learning engaging to the students. I believe in encouraging students to take risks with their language use in a positive environment where they can learn from their mistakes. My approach is highly communicative, and I integrate humour, creativity, and practical examples to keep students motivated and confident. I also use tailored feedback to meet individual needs, ensuring that each student gets the support required to excel at their own pace.

Throughout the course, students will not only be prepared for the PET exam but will also develop broader English skills that will serve them well in everyday life, work, and further studies.

By the end of the course, students will be fully prepared for their PET exam with a deep understanding of the test format, a solid grasp of the necessary language skills, and the confidence to perform to the best of their abilities.
