This class is taught in English.
The learning goal of this class is to get exposure to all the foundational skills young learners need to become independent speakers. We'll be introducing, assessing and revising skills in the following 5 areas throughout: - phonological awareness - alphabetical awareness - phonics - basic grammar relevant to the level - core vocabulary relevant to the level - developing fluency and speaking skills As classes progress, we'll review common spelling patterns, basic punctuation, phonological awareness and more! We'll use the words, sentences and phonics from classes to play games and do activities that recycle and recontextualize the material for deeper comprehension and retention, such as: going on a "phonics scavenger hunt", playing "word bingo", turning a theme from the lesson into a personal science or art project and even researching a fun fact about the real world that we discover!.
I have over 20 years of teaching experience as well as specialized training in the skills we'll use in the class. I've also taught this class for over a year in public and private schools in Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan honing the approach, goals and side-projects along the way. Besides two separate 160 hour TESOL certifications for English teaching, I have been trained in evaluating, administering and prep for the most important international English exams from the initial ones like "PET" all the way to university level entrance exams like "IELTS" and "TOEFL" and even certifications for professionals! I also had countless hours of in-service training at schools I've taught at (i.e. British Council among others) for reading skills, comprehension, fluency and much more!
There's no homework associated with the class. Homework assigned will be optional, but I'll happily correct it.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
