The ESL Cafe is a place for your learner to practice their English with other ESL students. Each class will have a topic of discussion as well as visual aides to encourage conversation. Students will also be given helpful lessons on vocabulary, grammar, and functional language in English. Class structure will consist of an opener, open discussion, English lesson, and finally given corrections on speaking mistakes I heard during the class. I will use props, images, and movement to demonstrate language. Some topics discussed in class will include animals, food, travel, hobbies, and more! About the instructor: I have been teaching English for 3 years both in person and online. I have taught over 6,000 classes for VIPKid and for 3 months in Vietnam. Teacher expertise and credentials
I am Mandy Hornsby, a teacher and librarian from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After nearly 3 years of teaching online, I am excited to begin teaching on the Outschool platform. History, English, reading, travel, and hedgehogs are some of my favorite topics!
In 2007, I completed my Bachelors from the University of Southern Mississippi in English and History. My masters by research came from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland the following year. I spent 2 years working as a librarian in the public library while participating in the alternate route teacher’s program through William Carey University. For the next 6 years, I worked as a school librarian and enjoyed sharing story time with my elementary school students.
I found myself ready for a big change in 2017. That summer, I completed my CELTA (Certificate to Teach English to Speakers of Other Languages) with Cambridge University’s pop up campus in Phoenix, Arizona. Then I traveled to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to teach English in public schools around the city. It was such an eye opening experience and I was sad to cut my adventure short to return home. At this point I did not want to lose my momentum and began teaching for VIPKid.
For over 2 and a half years I get up early to teach English to students in China. I have taught over 6,000 classes with over 2,400 5 apple ratings. I spend my days helping others with historical research requests and genealogy requests at our county’s Local History Department.
In my free time, I enjoy reading and watching Asian dramas. My husband and I enjoy kayak fishing and paddle boarding as well. My personal goal is to travel the world and see as many places as possible. To date, I have visited 20 countries and over 30 U.S. states.
Teaching has been part of my life since working with student support at the University of Southern Mississippi. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of history and English with my students. You can look for primary document drive historical knowledge and a passion for reading in my classes.
I hope to see your student in my virtual classroom soon!
