In this two week course, students will learn to design visual appealing presentations in PowerPoint, Google Slides, and Canva

Class experience

Our learning goals are to:
understand and use the 4 elements of design: contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity
to understand and use basic color theory
to create custom color palettes using Hex or RGB codes
to use Smart Art effectively and strategically
to use quality images strategically

In each live session, I will provide instruction on two or three design and presentation topics (details below), students will then present their work to demonstrate an understanding of the previous session's concepts. I will offer immediate feedback; then, classmates will offer constructive criticism using "I like ______. I wonder ______. Have you considered ________" to keep the feedback useful, honest, but positive.

Week One: PowerPoint, SmartArt, Color Wheel, Complementary, Monochromatic, and Triadic color combinations

Week Two: CARP, Canva Part One
Students will showcase their presentations using PowerPoint and demonstrate an understanding of the color wheel and how to build color combinations that will appeal to a wide audience

Week Three: Canva Part Two, Balance, Images as message, Whitespace
Students will present visuals created in Canva with a focus on contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity

Week Four: Google Slides, The Two-Thirds Rule, Hex codes, RBG codes
Students will present in Google Slides. Presentations should showcase balance and whitespace

I have created presentations for a wide variety of audiences from university students to corporate leaders with goals ranging from informing to persuading. Helping professionals in IT, finance, and higher education design and deliver presentations has prepared me to help young learners develop this essential skill.
