Intermediate English Learners need to do more than memorize vocabulary lists and complete grammar exercises to move toward fluency. In this course, we will spend a few minutes reviewing three elements of English: 1. high-frequency irregular verbs, 2. a list of vocabulary related to the elements of story, 3. a common map of plot. Most of our session will be focused on writing a story collaboratively. Students will use vocabulary while being creative, active, and collaborative. I will offer immediate constructive correction for grammar, syntax, or word choice errors. Seeing how our story develops is fun and can be quite surprising. Practicing English this way makes the work social which is especially effective for young learners. Example of a Session: Teacher: Shares a short list of irregular verbs, reviews meanings of character, setting, and plot. Teacher: Once upon a time, Olivia ate a magic apple and went into the Orange Forrest. Student Alice: Olivia was scared. Student Leo: Olivia saw a bird. Teacher: Great start and I like the use of the irregular verbs "to be" and "to see" Do we need to say Olivia each time? Student Betty: We can say she. Teacher: Excellent, Betty. Let's continue. Student Joey: The bird said hello to Olivia.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to use irregular verbs and new vocabulary in a creative writing project while adhering to the rules of character, setting, and plot development.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Doctoral Degree in English from University of Central Florida
I teach English literature, conversation, and document design classes for native English speakers and English language learners. My teaching career began 20 years ago in a large high school and has since included 1:1 language coaching, university courses from composition to world literature, and technical writing. I am happiest when I am reading a good book, discussing poetry, or creating a color palette for a presentation or document. Sharing these interests with young learners and helping them develop the skills needed to succeed in English courses and to enjoy literature has been a wonderful new stage in my teaching career.
