Class Experience
In this course, students will practice reading and speaking English with a focus on speaking. Each class, we will read an article from National Geographic Kids magazine and then answer comprehension and discussion questions about the reading. A typical class will follow this structure: Warm-up greetings: 5 minutes Reading: 5 - 10 minutes Guided Discussion: 15 - 20 minutes I will give immediate feedback about pronunciation, word choice, and sentence structure. Students will build their English vocabulary in the areas of science, art, geography, history, and culture. They will improve their speaking skills and grow more confident using English when reading, answering questions, and discussing a variety of topics including space, weather, sea animals, jungle animals, natural disasters, human-made wonders, cultures around the world. I have been teaching English for 20 years and have a BA in English literature, an MA in Technical Writing, and a Ph.D. in English: Texts and Technology. I work with students from 4 to 70+ who want to speak confidently in school, in the office, or with friends.
Practice the words and phrases used in class during the week. The more you use the new vocabulary, the more likely it is to become a permanent part of your long-term memory.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
35 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
All articles and materials will be provided in class
