Description

Class Experience

Students will learn to analyze stories, to make connections between the story and their lives, other books, and the world, and to form and communicate a well-organized opinion about the characters, the plot, and the language used in the story. In this course, students will practice their writing skills and speaking skills via written posts and recorded spoken replies.  

Week One: Elements of Plot Part One and Chapters One - Five

Sunday - Saturday: Students read 5 chapters of the book
Sunday: I post two instructional videos
Tuesday: I post discussion questions requiring summary, analysis, and synthesis
Thursday: Students should post replies to the discussion questions as video recordings, written responses, or a combination
Friday and Saturday: Learners and I will post replies to student videos and written replies 

Week Two: Elements of Plot Part Two and Chapters Six - Ten

Sunday - Saturday: Students read 5 chapters of the book
Sunday: I post two instructional videos
Tuesday: I post discussion questions requiring summary, analysis, and synthesis
Thursday: Students should post replies to the discussion questions as video recordings, written responses, or a combination
Friday and Saturday: Learners and I will post replies to student videos and written replies 

Week Three: Three Connection Types, Character analysis Part One, Summary, and Chapters Eleven - Fifteen

Sunday - Saturday: Students read 5 chapters of the book
Sunday: I post two instructional videos
Tuesday: I post discussion questions requiring summary, analysis, and synthesis
Thursday: Students should post replies to the discussion questions as video recordings, written responses, or a combination

Week Four: Analysis versus synthesis and Chapters Sixteen - Twenty

Sunday - Saturday: Students read 5 chapters of the book
Sunday: I post two instructional videos
Tuesday: I post discussion questions requiring summary, analysis, and synthesis
Thursday: Students should post replies to the discussion questions as video recordings, written responses, or a combination
Friday and Saturday: Learners and I will post replies to student videos and written replies 

Week Five: Text-to-self, Text-to-text, and Text-to-world applied, and Chapters Twenty-one - Twenty-five

Sunday - Saturday: Students read 5 chapters of the book

Week Six: Conclusions, denouement, Character analysis Part Two, and Chapters Twenty-six - Thirty

Restart novel (hardcover on Amazon 10.99 or Kindle version 3.99) I will provide a template for the About Me cube that can be printed and folded.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be provided a link to a Kahoot! game on kahoot.it. The questions in the Kahoot! will assess comprehension and spark deeper thought about the book's theme.
