What's included

1 live meeting
30 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
1 hour per week. If we choose a specific movie or book to talk about, students would need to complete this activity ahead of class time. Optional target question sheet to help student prepare to talk about a specific subject may be offered for some classes.
Assessment
Learners are evaluated informally, and corrections in pronunciation and grammar will occur in real time, as much as possible. Gentle correction with modeling of the correct way to say it is my standard for ESL conversations.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
We will practice speaking in full English sentences. We will chat about things that interest us. Students can suggest topics ahead of class and we can develop target questions and post them ahead of time, so students can feel prepared to answer. There will be lots of interaction and expectation is that student is on camera and responding as best as he/she is able. Students are welcome to bring props/pictures to help them express their ideas. Additionally, the teacher will have various props and pictures to help student comprehension and increase student expression.
If you do not see a posted time that works for your schedule, please suggest a good time for us to have class.
(Dates tentative)
Week 1 (November 10) My Favorite Foods - bring pictures or examples of your favorite foods: fruit, vegetable, meat, breakfast, drink, dessert?
Week 2 (November 17) My Family - conversations about our family and how we spend time together
Week 3 (November 24) My Favorite Movie - characters? plot? what do you like about it?
Week 4 (December 1) My Hobbies - activities I enjoy; skills and talents I have outside of school
Week 5 (December 8) My Friends - how do you like to spend time with friends?
Week 6 (December 15++) and beyond: we can choose subjects that interest us.

Hello! My name is Teacher Kathy, and I look forward to seeing you in my classroom! I teach students of all ages to become better readers and writers through integrated, interactive, and hands-on learning. I enjoy incorporating art and music into learning, and aim to reach all styles of learners: audio, visual, and kinesthetic.
My goal for each class is for students to walk away with useful, real skills in reading, writing, and vocabulary that will benefit them in whatever their own personal goals may be. Communication skills are essential in whatever successful pursuits a person may have, and my aim is to provide personalized, friendly, and fun help in becoming a better communicator: on paper, in person, online, conversationally, and (eventually) professionally.
I have been a middle school language arts and social studies teacher (15 years), and I taught life skills (3 years), introductory Spanish (2 years) and elementary art (1 year). I have been a high school English teacher in Literature, Grammar, and Practical English. I have also taught English as a Second Language online for the past 4 years. I have my Masters in Education and Curriculum from UMC.
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy reading, writing, cooking, sewing, crafts, camping and all things cats. As a writer, I have always kept journals, notes, lists, and written down my dreams in the middle of the night, in hopes of one day publishing a book (which has finally come to be a reality in 2021!) I like to spend time with my husband and six “kid-ties,” and enjoy traveling and learning about new parts of the world.
