Class Experience

The British king is becoming a tyrant. He is refusing to give colonists a voice in the Parliament, while imposing laws and taxes that affect only you in the colonies. “How can an island rule a continent?” is how Thomas Paine would say it in his heart-stirring pamphlet Common Sense several years later. Samuel Adams, the founder of the underground resistance group, Sons of Liberty, has begun to organize protests. You have shown courage, trustworthiness, and most importantly the ability to think on your feet. He has chosen you to help organize the local chapters of the Sons of Liberty. Samuel Adams needs to send coded messages to the resistance to organize them. And you are the person for the job. If the British were to find out, you would all be hanged for treason. Be careful, be quick, and don’t let the secret information fall into the wrong hands.

Before the class starts you will be able to download a short "Puzzle Preview" sheet for all of the puzzles with a lot of good historical information packed in. This will be a time saver during the escape room so there is no confusion about what exactly to do in the puzzle. Don't worry there will still be many other surprises.

You will have only 50 minutes to decode and deliver the messages to organize protests and boycotts of Britain's harsh laws and taxes. You have to be quick because your last puzzle secures your entry into the famous Boston Tea Party in a final act of defiance!

In this action, information packed Escape Room:
* Find a hidden proverb in Poor Richard's Almanack and decode what it means for the Sons of Liberty
* Find hidden messages in two, unique codes
* Find the secret symbol the Sons of Liberty used to protest the Stamp Act
* Find the code hidden in a picture to get into the Boston Tea Party

THIS IS A GREAT INTRODUCTION ACTIVITY TO THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION! It will give an overview of the Sons of Liberty, Daughters of Liberty, Patriots and Tories, Stamp Act, Townshend Act, Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanack, and so much more!

I have always been very curious and creative and I love to inspire it in kids (both my own and others) as well. I like to teach through projects, which give students a choice on the way they learn and show their understanding. I also love to teach through games and like to combine game elements in my classes.

I believe history, studied in context, to be extremely important. In fact, it's one of our best teachers. The other "subject" I believe to be of high importance is Logic. Unfortunately, logic has long been left off most curriculums. Knowing how to examine events and history through logical thinking and analysis gives us a deep, true understanding of our world.

I'm a big believer in every parent having all the need to school their children all the way through high school. So, if you are ever in doubt, let me encourage you.

My educational consulting company, It's A Potsick Education, exists to build up curious, creative learners. I do custom content/lesson design, private, online events, consulting, and more. Message me for anything you need.

I was a classroom teacher in the public schools for over 15 years and, for the past 14 years, have been helping my wife homeschool as well. I currently hold state certifications in Florida (certificate # 960883) in the areas of Middle Grades Social Science and Language Arts and Elementary Education. I have extensive classroom experience with all Elementary and Middle Grades subject content and have done private tutoring for many years in Math, Civics, Science, and Language Arts.
