Each day of this camp, students will be randomly grouped into teams tasked with solving clues in literature, history, and grammar in order to be the first group to escape! The escape rooms will be through Google Forms, and students will be in breakout rooms with their teammates as they work their way through the clues together. I will be helping and checking in on each group, assisting students when they are stuck. Guidance will be provided in the form of study guides upon enrollment,...
Students will improve their understanding of: - tips for a successful school year - accomplishments and bravery of many African Americans - plagiarism and how to avoid it - commonly confused words and when to use each - short story elements in "The Fall of the House of Usher"
I adore teaching literature, history, and English classes, and in my years of experience in the public education classroom, there is no better way to gain student engagement than through an escape room.
Reading the short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" is recommended before Class #5. The full version is available through the public domain for free in many places online, and Mrs. Zerr will provide links to both the full version and an abridged version in the classroom on day 1 to allow students time to read the work. ***The abridged version is just over five pages in length.***
Though these can be completed on a smart phone or tablet, it is usually beneficial to use a computer or laptop for these classes, if one is available. Many students have completed these escape rooms using a smart phone or tablet, though.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- Google Forms
- Google Sites
- Google Slides
- various other clue web tools and articles
Students' progress will be measured by whether or not they are able to complete the escape room. I will be there to offer assistance and guidance throughout the process.
3 hours 45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
The Black History Month Escape Room is designed to familiarize learners with the accomplishments of many African Americans. Learners will walk away with a better understanding of the courage, determination, intelligence, and talent of many African Americans who led this nation in discoveries, inventions, and civil rights. My goal was to not only mention well-known names such as Thurgood Marshall, Barak Obama, and Oprah Winfrey, but to also study other important people that may not have been studied as much such as Marva Collins, Benjamin Banneker, Garrett Morgan, Patricia Bath, Charles Drew, and plenty more. In addition, students will read and analyze a short article by Martin Luther King, Jr. "The Fall of the House of Usher" Escape Room covers the short story, and it is highly recommended that learners read the story prior to this escape room. Mrs. Zerr will link a full version and an abridged version in the classroom on day 1 to give learners plenty of time to read. The abridged version is just over five (5) pages in length. This is a rather creepy and dark story, so please keep that in mind for your individual learner. At New Horizons Academy, we understand how difficult setting your family's schedule can be, juggling everyone's activities and classes. To honor that time commitment, we are proud to be able to offer another of our organization's Outschool-approved and trained teachers (Mrs. Becky, Teacher Sara, Ms. Monica, or Teacher Donna) in the rare occurrence of teacher illnesses or urgent personal events. This will allow you to keep your schedule in-tact as much as possible and keep the learning going!
