Naa nuh, naa nuh, naa nuh... In this underwater escape room, learners will work in small groups to solve several kinds of puzzles - jigsaw, logic, visual, and trivia - in order to escape a shark attack! Along the way, students will learn interesting facts about different kinds of sea life and have some fun. ***Learners that escape with plenty of time to spare will receive a BONUS PUZZLE to solve!*** The scenario is this... You are scuba diving and enjoying some amazing underwater sights when suddenly you see a shark... Eek!!! You've heard that sharks are not actually as aggressive as they're portrayed to be in the movies, but you don't plan on sticking around to find out! In order to get back to the surface without getting the shark's attention, you need to use cunning, knowledge of your environment and the animals that inhabit it, and problem solving skills. Learners will need to solve puzzles hidden in a Google Site. All information and clues needed are hidden somewhere in the escape room, and I will provide hints if needed. Since the escape room runs through a Google Site, it works best if you are using Chrome. During class, all students will be oriented to the task, open the presentation, and then be split into teams of no more than 4 to work in breakout rooms. This will allow students to contribute more meaningfully than working individually or in a large group. I will be going from room to room to check on students' progress and answer any questions they may have. ***Note: Class is listed as 60 minutes long but depending on how long it takes teams to work through the puzzles, it could take anywhere from 45-75 minutes. SIBLING DISCOUNT: Do you have more than one child that wants to participate? Message me after you enroll and I will refund you $3 for each extra learner.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.
Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.
When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
