Description

Class Experience

Every Monday, learners will be invited to board our time machine and enter a digital escape room (hosted in Google sites). Here, they will solve puzzles, complete challenges, and play games as they learn about the topic for the week. Students will learn about four different historical events through audio lectures, puzzles, games, and additional videos and reading resources. They will also complete challenges and answer comprehension questions as they move through the rooms. Together, we'll answer questions such as "What happened to the settlers of the Lost Colony of Roanoke?" and "Why did Tituba confess to possessing the girls during the Salem Witch Trials?" These guided classroom discussions (hosted in the Outschool classroom) are intended to encourage students to think beyond what they've learned and practicing forming and stating opinions.
I have had the pleasure to teach Dark History: An Ongoing Class for Teens on the Outschool platform since January 2020 and have had a blast! This class moves my favorite lessons into a highly-interactive and fun format. While I am not a traditionally educated history teacher, I believe in integrating history into all of my classes and have done so successfully for more than 10 years. A thorough understanding of the past allows students to grow and develop opinions and become comfortable sharing them in a classroom setting. I love all things macabre and can't wait to share these dark moments in history with your learner!
Following their escape, students will share their thoughts and opinions on the topic for the week through guided classroom discussion posts. Together, we'll answer questions such as "What happened to the settlers of the Lost Colony of Roanoke?" and "Why did Tituba confess to possessing the girls during the Salem Witch Trial?" These guided classroom discussions are intended to encourage students to think beyond what they've learned and practice forming and stating opinions. Discussion posts for the week should be submitted by Friday at 5pm.
All materials will be provided by the instructor. While digital escape rooms are accessible from any device, it is recommended that students use a laptop or desktop computer with audio capabilities. This will allow them to get the most out of our class!
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will be asked to complete challenges, solve puzzles, and answer comprehension questions as they move through the weekly escape room. Additionally, we will practicing forming and sharing opinions through guided classroom discussion posts.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
All topics and content are appropriate for teen learners. If you have a student under the age of 13 who wishes to enroll, please contact me first for additional guidance.
